DEPARTMENTAL GOALS

To assist students in achieving their full potential

  • Ensure that all students have a balanced and broad mathematics curriculum
  • Ensure that all pupils have a programme that progresses from Year 7 to Year 12

  • Provide opportunities for pupils to enjoy and develop confidence within the subject

  • Provide opportunities for pupils to take responsibility for their own learning by encouraging the development of problem solving, practical and investigative skills.

Students will:

  • be able to apply mathematics in a variety of life settings.

  • learn the language of mathematics in English and be able to effectively communicate ideas about mathematics in English.

  • be critically thinking individuals who can create and test hypotheses in a logical process.

  • be able to competently use and know when to use technology such as the graphing calculator or computer.

  • be able to develop the habit of justifying their reasoning in a systematic and comprehendable manner both in oral and written form.

  • develop a deep understanding of mathematics through the process of proof and justification.

  • be able to make connections within areas of mathematics as well as to areas in other fields.

  • develop a variety of problem solving techniques and strategies that they can apply in a variety of situations.

  • value the need for personal organization and develop the habit of regular systematic study.

  • learn responsibility for self, others and equipment.

  • learn that all have the right to express their ideas and be listened to even when one does not agree with their idea.

  • value learning as cooperative where we help one another to understand yet value the goal of doing their individual best in an healthy competitive way.

  • take advantage of the opportunities to participate in national and international mathematics contests and exams.
