PRIMARY SCHOOL

General Information

Primary school education follows the National Curriculum of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. The primary level syllabus for the National Curriculum is found in the Department of Education handbook ‘National Curriculum Key stages 1 – 2'.

The Primary School accepts children between six and eleven years of age. It also has two stages as outlined below:

Stage 1

Infant years

6 to 7 years of age

Stage 2

Junior years

8 to 11 years of age

Stage 1 - infant classes will have only one teacher each who will be responsible for the education of their particular classes for the full academic year.

Stage 2 - junior primary pupils will have several teachers for different subject topics during the school year.

Lessons in the primary level will be thematic rather than subject specific, though the National Curriculum Programmes of Study must be followed by class teachers.

From this perspective, TUIS is a school, which, regardless of location, size or constitution, strives towards developing an international person. An international person reflects the following student attributes and dispositions:

Inquirers - Their natural curiosity has been nurtured. They have acquired the skills necessary to conduct purposeful, constructive research. They actively enjoy learning and this love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives.

Thinkers - They exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to make sound decisions and to solve complex problems.

Communicators - They receive and express ideas and information confidently in more than one language, including the language of mathematical symbols.

Risk-takers - They approach unfamiliar situations without any anxiety and have the confidence and independence of spirit to explore new roles, ideas and strategies. They are courageous and articulate in defending those things in which they believe.

Knowledgeable - They have spent time in our schools exploring themes which have global relevance and importance. In so doing, they have acquired a critical mass of significant knowledge.

Principled - They have a sound grasp of the principles of moral reasoning. They have integrity, honesty and a sense of fairness and justice.

Caring - They show sensitivity towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a sense of personal commitment to action and service.

Open-minded - They respect the views, values and traditions of other individuals and cultures and are accustomed to seeking and considering a range of points of view.

Well-balanced - They understand the importance of physical and mental balance and personal well-being.

Reflective - They give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and analyze their personal strengths and weaknesses in a constructive manner.

Key Features of Our Curriculum

• An international perspective where we recognize and build upon the diversity of student experiences and background.

• An inquiry based approach where our teaching methods build upon individual understandings, knowledge and interests, emphasizing how to learn and how to find out.

• An integration of subjects through interdisciplinary themes. Subjects are at times taught as distinct learning areas. However, the learning is embedded in themes where students are encouraged to make connections between subjects, making learning more effective. These themes are called Units of Inquiry .

What are the main elements of our curriculum?

Key concepts are expressed as questions and explored through each Unit of Inquiry studied:

• What is it like? ( form )

• How does it work? ( function )

• Why is it like it is? ( causation )

• How is it changing? ( change )

• How is it connected to other things? ( connection )
