YEAR 1

By the end of Year 1 it is hoped that each child will have had access to and have mastered the following skills in the following areas:

LITERACY

Speaking and Listening

The students will be able to:

  • talk about matters of immediate interest
  • listen to others
  • ask appropriate questions
  • speak audibly
  • begin to use descriptive language.

Writing

The students will be able to:

  • communicate meaning through words and sentences
  • begin to use full stops appropriately
  • begin to form clear letters.

Reading

The students will be able to:

  • recognize some high frequency vocabulary
  • say and use letter names and sounds
  • respond to stories and poems identifying aspects that they like
  • gain meaning from reading.

NUMERACY

Using and Applying Mathematics

The students will be able to:

  • use pictures and objects to represent their work
  • solve whole number story problems including money.

Number and Algebra

The students will be able to:

  • count, order, add and subtract number 10
  • read and write numbers to 10
  • recognize and make repeating patterns
  • solve missing number stories
  • estimate a small number of objects.

Shape, Space and Measurement

The students will be able to:

  • order objects and make comparisons
  • order events
  • work with 2D + 3D shapes describing properties and positions
  • tell the time using "o'clock" and "half past".

Handling Data

The students will be able to:

  • sort and classify objects giving reasons for classification choices
  • interpret information taken from a simple chart or graph.

SCIENCE

Electricity

The students will be able to:

  • understand that many things use electricity and that we must use them safely
  • make a bulb light using a battery, understanding that this will not work if there is a break in the circuit
  • identify some materials which conduct electricity
  • use a switch to break a circuit and turn things on and off
  • draw pictures to show a circuit and make a circuit using pictures.

Change

The students will be able to:

  • understand that heating and cooling can change things
  • understand that some changes can be reversed but others can not
  • appreciate that some changes can be harmful.

Plant Life

The students will be able to:

  • understand that there are different kinds of plants.
  • understand that plants need air, light and water to stay alive.
  • understand that plants can make new plants and that all plants have a life-cycle.

Forces

The students will be able to

  • understand that a force is a push or a pull and that a push or pull force can make something start to change the shape of some things
  • recognise that magnets can push or pull some things
  • understand that the bigger the push or pull force the further something moves, or the more the shape of something is changed
  • understand that a pull force can stretch things and a push force can make things slow down, go faster or stop.

Earth and Beyond

The students will be able to:

  • recognise that the Earth is a planet that is made of rock, air and water and that things can live on Earth
  • understand that the Sun is a star and that it gives us heat and light and that living things need heat and light to survive
  • understand that the Moon is made of rock and that is has no air or water
  • recognise that there are plenty of other planets in space and that they are all different.

ART

The students will be able to:

  • express with confidence what they see and touch
  • choose suitable materials to express their ideas
  • work with both imagination and practicality in making 2D + 3D artwork.

MUSIC

The Music Course in Year 1 will cover the following areas:

Melody

  • melodic patterns
  • high and low registers
  • singing
  • ostinato
  • melodic patterns on mallet instruments.

Rhythm

  • how to keep a steady pulse
  • singing
  • rhythm with body or classroom instruments
  • movement to music.

Harmony

  • Create harmony with or without instruments

Tone colour

  • listen to environmental sounds.
  • individuals / groups produce various tone qualities
  • explore various uses of voice: sing, speak, shout, hum, whisper.
  • use a wide variety of percussion instruments- thereby learn percussion sounds.

Expressive Qualities

  • music in a variety of styles
  • dynamics of loud and soft, crescendo and diminuendo
  • tempo-fast/slow, louder/softer.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE)

The student will be able to:

  • explore orientation and basic locomotion
  • develop spatial awareness
  • develop large ball skills such as bouncing, catching and throwing
  • participate in co-operative games such as leader ball and tunnel ball
  • develop gymnastic skills
  • improve fitness level
  • develop games skills
  • develop dance / aerobics skills.
