YEAR 2

By the end of year two each child will have had access to the skills in the following areas:

LITERACY

Speaking and Listening

The students will be able to:

  • speak clearly and use a growing vocabulary
  • listen carefully and respond appropriately.

Reading

  • show understanding and be generally accurate when reading simple texts
  • express opinions about major events they have read about
  • use more than one strategy when reading unfamiliar words and establishing meaning.

Writing

The students will be able to:

  • communicate meaning using a developing, interesting and appropriate vocabulary
  • develop ideas in a sequence of sentences with emerging use of capital letters and full stops
  • use simple words usually spelt correctly and where there are inaccuracies, the alternative sounds right
  • write letters which are accurately formed and consistent in size.

NUMERACY

Using and Applying Mathematics

The students will be able to:

  • select mathematical equipment for classroom activities
  • use familiar mathematical language when discussing work and begin to represent work appropriately
  • ask and answer questions appropriately within mathematical activities.

Number and Algebra

The students will be able to:

  • mentally add and subtract up to 10
  • understand place value to 100
  • distinguish between addition and subtraction problems
  • identify halves and quarters
  • recognise some number patterns
  • understand what odd and even numbers are.

Shape, Space and Measurement

The students will be able to:

  • name common 2D and 3D shapes and describe their properties
  • recognise a right angle and understand that an angle is a measurement of a turn
  • begin to use non-standard and standard units to measure length and mass.

Handling Data

The students will be able to:

  • gather information and record results using simple tables, block graphs and diagrams

SCIENCE

Ourselves and other animals

The students will be able to:

  • understand animals need food to live and move. Animals move to get their food
  • recognise that animals have a life cycle. Animal babies can grow to adults
  • understand animals bodies depend on the food they eat.

Sound

The students will be able to:

  • understand sounds can be loud or quiet. Sounds get quieter the further they go
  • recognise that sounds can be high and sounds can be low
  • understand that sounds travels in all directions and that sound can travel through materials.

Materials

The students will be able to:

  • understand that the same materials can have many uses
  • understand that changing materials can make them useful
  • choose to use materials because of their special properties.

Environment

The students will be able to:

  • understand some animals eat plants, some animals eat other animals, some animals eat both plants and other animals
  • understand a good habitat provides everything a plant or animal needs
  • understand a change in their habitat can affect plants and animals.

Light

The students will be able to:

  • identify things which give out light
  • understand we need light to see. It is dark when there is no light
  • recognise things block light
  • understand light does not bend around things.

ART

The students will be able to:

  • record their ideas and feelings confidently when representing what they see and touch
  • choose suitable resources and materials when developing ideas for their work and use them properly and imaginatively
  • present their work in two and three dimensions
  • describe and compare art work in simple terms
  • recognise differences in art work and compare these to their own art work.

MUSIC

The music course in Year 2 will cover the following areas.

Melody

  • high and low registers
  • create and sing melodies, lyrics and music
  • ostinato
  • melodic patterns on mallet instruments.

Rhythm

  • long and short sounds
  • singing
  • rhythm with body or classroom instruments
  • movement to music - stop, start, conduct long and short sounds.

Harmony

  • Play instruments with and without accompaniment.

Tone colour

  • work on head voice/ chest voice
  • individuals / groups produce various tone qualities
  • explore various uses of voice: sing, speak, shout, hum, whisper
  • use a wide variety of percussion instruments, therefore learning percussion sounds.

Form & Structure

  • Learn to identify main theme
  • Respond to mood.

Expressive Qualities

  • distinguish music in a variety of styles
  • demonstrate dynamics of loud soft, crescendo diminuendo
  • demonstrate tempo - fast slow, faster slower.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The students will be able to:

  • explore orientation and basic locomotion skills
  • develop spatial awareness
  • develop large ball skills
  • participate in cooperative games
  • develop gymnastic skills
  • improve their fitness level
  • develop game skills
  • develop dance / aerobics skills.
