YEAR 3

By the end of year three each child will have had access to the following skills in the following areas:

LITERACY

Speaking and Listening

The student will be able to:

  • show understanding of the main points when listening to a question
  • ask questions or make comments to show that he/she has listened carefully
  • express ideas clearly and use an increased vocabulary
  • vary the use of language/vocabulary to suit the needs of the listener.

Reading

The students will be able to:

  • read a range of texts accurately, independently and with enjoyment
  • express opinions about main ideas in fiction and non-fiction
  • use phonic, graphic, syntactic and contextual strategies when reading unfamiliar words and can establish meaning
  • locate information in dictionaries through a knowledge of the alphabet.

Writing

The students will be able to:

  • express ideas sequentially and logically, using capital letters and full stops
  • have experience at writing in a variety of formats
  • write grammatically correct sentences
  • use basic forms of punctuation accurately (full stops, capital letters and question marks)
  • spell commonly used words correctly
  • use common, regular letter strings correctly when spelling
  • form letters correctly and begin cursive handwriting.

NUMERACY

Using and Applying Mathematics

The students will be able to:

  • use different approaches for solving problems
  • discuss and explain rationale for solving problems
  • organise their work and check results.

Number and Algebra

The students will be able to:

  • understand number concepts to 1000
  • use mental recall of addition and subtraction facts to 20 in solving addition and subtraction problems
  • add and subtract 2-digit numbers with regrouping
  • multiply single digit numbers with regrouping
  • multiply single digit numbers by 0,1,2,3,4,5
  • solve problems requiring addition, subtraction and multiplication
  • understand and use fractions of 1 / 2 , 1 / 4, 3/ 4.

Shape, Space and Measurement

The students will be able to:

  • recognise and know characteristics of 2D and 3D shapes
  • recognise right angles and perimeter in 2D shapes
  • recognise symmetry.
  • use and apply basic units of measurement for length, capacity, weight and time.

Handling Data

The students will be able to:

  • record and extract information on/from charts or tables
  • record information gathered in tables, block graphs and diagrams.

SCIENCE

Electricity

The students will be able to:

  • understand that a complete circuit is needed for an electric current to flow
  • use different components in a circuit to do different jobs.

Change

The students will be able to:

  • understand that heating and cooling can change things
  • understand that mixing materials can make them change
  • understand that some materials dissolve in liquids.

Plant Life

The students will be able to:

  • understand that there are different kinds of plants but that they have things in common
  • understand that plants need certain things to stay alive and grow.

Forces

The students will be able to:

  • understand that magnets can push or pull things without touching them and that magnets can repel other magnets
  • understand that gravity is a force which pulls things towards each other
  • understand that forces can change the speed of things.

Earth and Beyond

The students will be able to:

  • understand that the Sun is one of many stars in our galaxy
  • understand that the Earth is one of many planets in our solar system.

ART

The students will be given the opportunity to:

  • work individually, in groups and as a whole class
  • experiment with creative, imaginative and practical skills to express ideas, record and design
  • recognise the different ways in which ideas can be communicated in visual form
  • experiment with visual and tactile elements in order to demonstrate pattern and texture, colour, qualities of line, tone, shape , form and space
  • examine and discuss work of different artists in order to develop an appreciation of diversity
  • use different materials, tools and techniques in practical work.

Investigating and Making

The students will be able to:

  • use imagination and direct experience for recording
  • use materials and resources to develop ideas
  • experiment with tools and techniques for drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and sculpture xperiment with pattern , texture, colour , line, tone, shape, form and space when making images
  • reflect on and adapt their work as it progresses.

Knowledge and Understanding

The students will be able to:

  • develop an understanding of the materials and methods used by artists
  • identify how visual elements are used, express opinions on their own and others' work.

MUSIC

The students will be exposed to the following areas:

Melody

  • ostinato
  • the difference between high and low registers
  • melodic patterns
  • melodic patterns on mallet instruments
  • create and sing melodies, lyrics and music
  • simple 'sol fah - do to soh'.

Rhythm

  • long and short sounds notation of simple rhythmic patterns
  • singing
  • steady pulse
  • develop technique of playing instruments
  • conducting.

Harmony

  • sing and play counter melodies, rounds partner songs, ostinatos
  • introduction to simple part singing
  • play instruments with and without accompaniment
  • using and/or play two simultaneous melodies.

Tone colour

  • instrumental sounds through listening
  • explore various uses of the voice
  • head and chest register
  • individuals/groups produce various tone qualities.

Form & Structure

  • repetition and contrast, verse /refrain
  • experience performance of various forms; binary, ternary and rondo
  • repetition and contrast
  • mood, purpose of compositions.

Expressive Qualities

  • Music in a variety of stylesDynamics: loud/soft, cresc./dim
  • Tempo: faster/slower.

INFORMATION COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

The students will:

  • review the five major parts of a computer together with the proper care of software and hardware.
  • identify letters and numbers on the keyboard.
  • continue using a mouse.
  • begin to use appropriate terms when talking about the computer.
  • start using simulation programmes to help develop problem-solving skills.
  • begin using the menus of the programme
  • run teacher selected drill and practice or simulation applications
  • begin to coordinate their basic keyboard skills with software that allows them to create short written documents, including tables and graphs
  • use the World Wide Web to complement other school curriculum areas
  • use a list of teacher selected bookmarks for an introduction to 'surfing'
  • review the five major parts of a computer and be aware of proper care of software and hardware standards
  • show a mastery in recognizing letters and numbers on the keyboard and in using the mouse
  • continue to use appropriate terms when talking about the computer
  • review the names of computer components
  • recognise the difference between upper and lower case letters, shift and caps lock
  • recognise the two sets of numbers on the keyboard
  • use desktop publishing - text, tables, pictures
  • review the location of letters and numbers on the keyboard
  • demonstrate a mastery of the use of the mouse.
  • review care of software and hardware as well as using the proper terminology
  • continue to use drill, practice and simulation programmes to extend other curriculum areas
  • be introduced to the effect of computers on their lives and the many occupations that use computers
  • be introduced to keyboarding to produce written assignments
  • use their knowledge of numbers and letters on the keyboard to begin word processing programmes; the students will begin using graphics with their work
  • continue to use web for class extension under the direct guidance of the teacher
  • continue to emphasize the correct terminology in all areas of the computer curriculum
  • use the spell-check to aid proofreading documents
  • begin to use the correct formatting techniques, tabs, and paragraph rulers when creating word processing documents

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The students will be able to:

  • explore orientation and basic locomotion skills
  • develop spatial awareness
  • develop games skills
  • develop ball skills
  • participate in cooperative games
  • develop gymnastic skills
  • develop dance / aerobics skills
  • improve their fitness level.
