YEAR 4

By the end of year four each child will have had access to the following skills in the following areas:

LITERACY

Speaking and Listening

The student will be able to:

  • develop confidence in listening to and talking about subjects that interest them
  • show an understanding of main points during a discussion
  • demonstrate that they have listened carefully through comments and questions raised in consequent discussion
  • show an awareness of standard English.
Reading

The student will be able to:
  • read a range of texts showing understanding
  • read orally with general accuracy
  • read independently, using appropriate strategies to establish meaning
  • respond to fiction and non-fiction by showing understanding of main points and express preferences
  • locate books and find information
  • begin to use inference and deduction.
Writing

The students will be able to:
  • write in a clear, organised and imaginative format
  • use the main features of different forms of writing appropriately and begin to adapt writing to different audiences
  • begin to sequence sentences, extend ideas logically
  • vocabulary choices are becoming more varied and adventurous
  • use grammatical structures generally correctly
  • spell accurately including common polysyllabic words
  • use handwriting which is joined, fluent and legible.
NUMERACY

Using and Applying Mathematics

The students will be able to:
  • develop their own strategies for solving problems and use these strategies in mathematics and in applying mathematics to practical contexts
  • organise their work and check their results
  • discuss their work and explain their thinking
  • use and interpret maths symbols and diagrams.
Number and Algebra

The students will be able to:
  • show understanding of place value up to 1000 and use this to make approximations
  • recognise negative numbers, money, temperature and calculator displays
  • use mental recall of addition and subtraction facts to 20 in solving problems involving larger numbers
  • use mental recall of tables 1-10 in solving multiplication and division problems including those with remainders
  • develop mental strategies and use them to find methods for adding and subtracting numbers of at least two digits
  • recognise simple fractions as part of a whole.
Space, Shape and Measurement

The students will be able to:
  • classify 3D and 2D shapes in various ways using mathematical properties such as reflective symmetry
  • reflect simple mirror shapes in a line
  • use non standard and standard units of length, mass, capacity and time in a range of contexts
  • find perimeters of simple shapes and find area by counting squares and volume by counting cubes.
Handling Data

The students will be able to:
  • extract and interpret data presented in simple tables and lists
  • construct bar charts and pictograms (where a symbol represents a group of units) to communicate information they have gathered and interpret information presented to them in these forms
  • understand how to collect discrete data and record it using a frequency table
  • understand and use simple vocabulary associated with probability, including fair, certain and likely.
SCIENCE

Ourselves and other animals

The students will be able to:
  • understand that there are different kinds of animals but they have characteristics in common
  • understand that animals need certain things to stay alive and grow.
Sound

The students will be able to:
  • understand that things which vibrate very quickly are sources of sounds
  • recognise that some materials do not let sound through, some materials reflect sound and some materials let sound pass through
  • understand that we hear things when sound reaches our ears.
Materials

The students will be able to:
  • recognise that materials have certain properties that make them useful
  • group materials and compare the properties of the groups.
Environment

The students will be able to:
  • understand that living things are adapted to their environment
  • recognise that there is a relationship between plants and animals in an environment.
Light

The students will be able to:
  • understand that very hot things are sources of light and that light travels from sources in straight lines
  • recognise that some things do not let light through. and that we call these things opaque
  • understand that some things do not let light through and these things cast shadows.
ART

Investigating and Making

The students will be able to:
  • express ideas and feelings confidently
  • experiment with, and show increasing control over, a range of materials, tools and techniques
  • make images and artifacts for differing purposes
  • reflect on and adapt their work, identifying ways in which it can be developed and improved.
Knowledge and Understanding

The students will be able to:
  • use an increasing vocabulary of art, craft and design terms
  • modify their work in light of what was intended
  • show interest and understanding in the work of the others
  • identify different art forms and the work of different artists.
MUSIC

The music course in Year 4 will cover the following areas:

Melody
  • Expand vocal range and quality through vocal exercises
  • Melodic phrases: like/unlike, same/different, longer/shorter
  • Ostinato
  • Melodic movement by steps, leaps and repeats
  • Simple -soh fah.
Tone Colour
  • Instrumental sounds through listening
  • Explore various use of voice - especially head and chest registers
Form & Structure through Listening
  • mood and purpose
  • type - opera, orchestral, choral, dance
  • period - baroque, classical, romantic, 20th cent
  • form - binary, ternary, rondo.
Expressive Qualities
  • the appropriateness of dynamic choices
  • music in a variety of styles and from many times and cultures
  • tempo: fast/slow, faster/slower, a tempo, rit/rall/accell.
INFORMATION COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

The students will be able to:
  • use drill and practice to extend other curriculum areas
  • demonstrate increasing mastery of computer care and handling
  • build on the keyboard knowledge learned in earlier grades
  • use correct fingering in typing skills
  • use a variety of keyboard tutoring programmes to accomplish typing skills, such as 'Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing'
  • use keyboard skills to accomplish a variety of tasks such as desktop publishing
  • input text into a word processing document
  • set printer options and print documents
  • become acquainted with common terms used in word processing
  • run the spell check (if applicable) and make the necessary corrections
  • begin to edit work by inserting and deleting text selections
  • demonstrate the ability to add clip-art to writing using the graphics available
  • use the web to browse for information
  • begin to use e-mail to correspond with another person outside school (teacher guided)
  • exchange e-mail with fellow classmates.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The students will be able to:
  • develop large and small ball skills
  • develop dance/ aerobic skills
  • improve fitness level
  • develop gymnastic skills
  • participate in team games such as basketball, netball and touch rugby
  • develop swimming skills at individual level
  • develop athletic skills.
