YEAR 4
By the end of year four each child will have had access to the following skills in the following areas:
LITERACY
Speaking and Listening
The student will be able to:

develop confidence in listening to and talking about subjects that interest them

demonstrate that they have listened carefully through comments and questions raised in consequent discussion

Reading
The student will be able to:

read a range of texts showing understanding

Writing

Using and Applying Mathematics
The students will be able to:

use and interpret maths symbols and diagrams.
Number and Algebra
The students will be able to:

show understanding of place value up to 1000 and use this to make approximations

recognise negative numbers, money, temperature and calculator displays
-
use mental recall of addition and subtraction facts to 20 in solving problems involving larger numbers
-
use mental recall of tables 1-10 in solving multiplication and division problems including those with remainders
-
develop mental strategies and use them to find methods for adding and subtracting numbers of at least two digits
-
recognise simple fractions as part of a whole.
Space, Shape and Measurement
The students will be able to:
-
classify 3D and 2D shapes in various ways using mathematical properties such as reflective symmetry
-
reflect simple mirror shapes in a line
-
use non standard and standard units of length, mass, capacity and time in a range of contexts
-
find perimeters of simple shapes and find area by counting squares and volume by counting cubes.
Handling Data
The students will be able to:
-
extract and interpret data presented in simple tables and lists
-
construct bar charts and pictograms (where a symbol represents a group of units) to communicate information they have gathered and interpret information presented to them in these forms
-
understand how to collect discrete data and record it using a frequency table
-
understand and use simple vocabulary associated with probability, including fair, certain and likely.
SCIENCE

use correct fingering in typing skills

use a variety of keyboard tutoring programmes to accomplish typing skills, such as 'Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing'

use keyboard skills to accomplish a variety of tasks such as desktop publishing

input text into a word processing document

set printer options and print documents

become acquainted with common terms used in word processing

run the spell check (if applicable) and make the necessary corrections
