YEAR 6
By the end of year six each child will have had access to the following skills in the following areas:

LITERACY

Speaking and Listening

The students will be able to:
  • talk and listen confidently in a wide range of contexts
  • express ideas, describe events and convey opinions clearly
  • contribute to discussion by using appropriate standards of English
Reading

The students will be able to:
  • show understanding of a range of texts select important points and use methods of deduction where appropriate
  • respond to text, identify key reading features, select sentences, phrases and information to increase their knowledge and understanding.
Writing

The students will be able to:
  • convey ideas clearly and express meaning accurately in varied and interesting ways
  • form basic and more complex sentences organised in structured paragraphs
  • use a range of punctuation marks accurately
  • use clear and fluent, joined handwriting.
NUMERACY

Using and Applying Mathematics

The students will be able to:
  • carry out tasks and solve mathematical problems to identify and gather information
  • check their results to see if changes need to be made to reach a more sensible answer
  • describe mathematical terminology, symbols and diagrams.
Number and Algebra

The students will be able to:
  • use their understanding of place value to multiply and divide whole numbers and decimals by 10, 100 and 1000
  • use the four basic operations competently
  • convert fractions to decimals and percentages
  • use a calculator effectively
  • develop an understanding for non calculator methods that involve three digit numbers.
Space and Shape

The students will be able to:
  • recognize and use 3-D and 2-D models
  • know the properties of triangles and quadrilaterals, measure and draw angles
  • convert units of measurement and make sensible estimates relating to everyday situations.
Handling Data

The students will be able to:
  • interpret data and use this data accordingly
  • interpret graphs and diagrams
  • find and justify probabilities and approximations to these, by selecting and using methods based on equally likely outcomes and experimental evidence as appropriate.
SCIENCE

Ourselves and other animals

The students will be able to:
  • understand that animals have a life cycle that includes birth, reproduction and death
  • understand that health can be affected by different things
  • know that animals have body systems.
Sound

The students will be able to:
  • know that we can change the pitch of a sound (the pitch of a sound is how many times something vibrates in a second)
  • know that we can change the loudness of sound (loudness depends on the size of the vibrations)
  • understand that some sounds can damage hearing and objects and that sound proofing can stop or muffle sounds.
Materials

The students will be able to:
  • know that the shape of materials can be changed to make them useful
  • understand that things are manufactured using materials which are chosen for their properties.
Environment

The students will be able to:
  • understand that habitats change
  • understand that an environment is a system which can be harmed.
Light

The students will be able to:
  • understand that some things let light through (we call these things translucent or transparent)
  • know that flat, shiny things reflect light and then we can see an image
  • know that everything reflects some light. We see objects because they reflect light which enters our eyes.
ART

Investigating and Making

The students will be able to:
  • record what they have experienced and imagined, expressing ideas and feelings confidently
  • represent chosen features of the world around them with increasing accuracy and attention to detail
  • select relevant resources and materials and experiment with ideas that are suggested by these
  • experiment with and show increasing control over a range of materials, tools and techniques
  • choose materials, methods and visual elements appropriate to their intentions, making images and artifacts for different purposes
  • reflect on and adapt their work, identifying ways in which it can be developed and improved.
Knowledge and Understanding

The students will be able to:
  • compare images and artifacts using an art, craft and design vocabulary. Identify similarities and differences in method and approach
  • begin to recognize how works of art, craft and design are affected by their purpose including where appropriate, the intentions of the artist, craftperson or designer and the time and place in which they were made
  • show interest and understanding in the work of others
  • evaluate their work and that of others in the light of what was intended.

MUSIC

The music course in Year 6 will cover the following areas:

Melody

  • singing in unison across a wide range of style
  • singing solos, partner songs, rounds and counter melodies
  • absolute and sol fah pitch names
  • melodic patterns on mallet instruments
  • melodic patterns
  • musical vocabulary
  • create and sing melodies, lyrics and music
  • melodic movement by steps, leaps and repeats.
Rhythm
  • music notation where relevant
  • singing
  • steady pulse
  • playing instruments
  • time signatures
  • rhythmic ostinatos
  • rhythms used to create and improvise accompaniments.
Harmony
  • sing and / or play two simultaneous melodies
  • sing and play counter melodies, rounds, partner songs, ostinatos.
Tone Colour
  • singing in groups and duets
  • explore various uses of the voice
  • instrumental sounds through listening.
Form & Structure through Listening
  • create accompaniment to highlight contrasts in form
  • repetition and contrast verse/refrain
  • experience performance of various forms - song, dance etc.
INFORMATION COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

The students will:
  • show a mastery of the necessary functions of the IBM Programme Menu system
  • be reviewing the different computer types, the variety of computer uses, and copyright laws and how those laws apply to the students
  • continue to develop their keyboard skills and how to use them in word processing
  • review database structure and key components
  • be introduced to the privacy implications surrounding computers
  • begin to learn the benefits of keyboard shortcuts and how to use them
  • be introduced to the tools that will generate graphics
  • review the copyright laws and what the laws mean to them
  • become familiar with the increasing issues of privacy with the computer boom caused by the internet
  • continue to develop correct keyboarding techniques
  • use the keyboard shortcuts to accomplish certain task
  • review the proper skills necessary to move within a document
  • edit their documents for mistakes and correct them
  • format their documents using a variety of tools
  • use headers and footers in their documents
  • use tabs to organize information in their documents
  • construct an outline of information
  • add clip art to their word processing document
  • review the basic concepts of a database
  • create fields for a simple database to be used as an address book
  • use the layout given by the computer to enter data into the database
  • be introduced to the differences between painting and drawing
  • be introduced to the basic tools from each palette for painting and drawing
  • understand the benefits from using a graphics grid
  • begin to use searches to research information.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The students will be able to:
  • develop large and small ball skills
  • develop dance/aerobic skills
  • improve their fitness level
  • develop gymnastic skills
  • participate in team games such as basketball, netball and touch rugby
  • develop swimming skills at their individual level
  • develop athletic skills.
